Breast Enlargement with Implant (Augmentation)
Surgery: Breast Augmentation (Mammaplasty)
Time required: 2 -3 hours
Anaesthesia: General
Length of Stay (In Hospital): 1 night in hospital standard room
Follow up: 7-10 days after surgery

Pre Operative Assessment

You will be asked to stop smoking well in advance of surgery including Aspirin and certain anti-inflammatory drugs which can cause increased bleeding.

If you are planning to lose a significant amount of weight, be sure to tell your plastic surgeon. He or she may recommend that you stabilize your weight prior to undergoing surgery.

Pregnancy can alter breast size in an unpredictable way and could affect the long-term results of your breast augmentation. There is no evidence that breast implants will affect pregnancy or your ability to breast-feed. Please ask your plastic surgeon.

Consultation will be arranged to discuss your medical history. You will be asked to provide completed information about this.

Your plastic surgeon will examine your breasts and take photographs for your medical records. Factors as the size, shape of your breasts, quality of skin and the placement of nipples and areolas will be considered by surgeon. If your breasts are sagging, a breast lift may be recommended in conjunction with augmentation.

Please avoid food and drink 6-8 hours prior to the operation.

Please prepare and bring support bra yourself for your post operative assessment.

Procedure information and technique

The implant is placed in a pocket either directly behind the breast tissue or underneath the pectoral muscle which is located between the breast tissue and chest wall.

The method of inserting and positioning your implant will depend on your anatomy and your surgeon's recommendation. The incision can be made either in the crease where the breast meets the chest, around the areola (the dark skin surrounding the nipple), or in the armpit.

Cohesive Gel Implants

Cohesive Gel Implants have a strong and durable silicone shell that is composed of several layers to prevent the ‘gel bleed’ that can occur with standard silicone breast implants. Additionally these breast implants can return to their original form and are reportedly soft and natural feeling.

Results of Breast Augmentation

To enhance the body contour of a woman who, for personal reasons, feels her breast size is too small.
To balance the breast size if differences exist.
To correct a reduction in breast volume after pregnancy.
Used as a reconstructive technique following breast surgery.

Once the surgical incisions have been closed and taped, the breasts are wrapped and supported by a gauze bandage. Breast augmentation patients are fitted with a surgical bra that provides support for several weeks.

Fatigue, soreness, and discomfort are post-operative conditions that are greatly reduced through medication. The swelling that follows breast enhancement surgery gradually subsides and becomes undetectable in one month's time.

Stitches are removed within 7 to 10 days following breast augmentation.

Breast Augmentation Risks and Complications

Capsular contracture (a tightening of the scar or capsule surrounding the breast implants) can occur following a breast augmentation procedure. If this happens, the plastic surgeon either "scores" the scar tissue, or removes the breast implant and re-inserts another.

Other breast augmentation complications include excessive bleeding and infection in the area surrounding the implants. Scars may be evident for several months, but they gradually fade. In some cases, the nipples may become hypersensitive or under-sensitive for a period after breast augmentation surgery.

In rare instances, the breasts may produce milk for several days after the surgical procedure.

To maximize the success of breast enlargement and minimize the risk of complication, always follow your plastic surgeon's instructions for surgical preparation and postoperative care.
